Which Size Bed Should You Get?
When purchasing a bed or mattress, there are numerous factors to consider, not the least of which size to select. If you're looking for a bed for two adults, there are several factors to consider.
First, consider the length. It is recommended that you purchase one that is at least 10cm longer than the tallest person. You don't want your feet dangling over the edge of the mattress or having to curl your legs up.
A standard UK double bed is only 190cm (6ft 3") long, so anyone taller than 5ft 11" (180cm) should choose one that is 200cm (6ft 6") long. A UK king size bed is 200cm long, as is a superking size, so either of these options is preferable.Some bed manufacturers make products that are 215cm (7ft 0") in length if you are particularly tall.
The majority of couples continue to sleep in standard double beds that are only 135cm (4ft 6") wide. This gives each user only 67.5cm or about 2ft 3" of space, which is less than what we give a baby in a cot! It's certainly very cosy for two people, but with so little room to move, you're more likely to wake up your partner every time you change positions, resulting in a restless night's sleep. Some couples, however, prefer to sleep close to each other, claiming that it improves intimacy over sleeping in a much larger bed where you literally have to go searching for your partner!
As partner disruption is a major cause of poor sleep, purchasing a larger bed should result in a better night's sleep. When trying on a bed, lie on your backs next to your partner and place your hands behind your head with your elbows sticking out. If your elbows do not come into contact with your partner's, you have enough space to sleep comfortably.
